Royce Elwood “Toby” Messer

Royce Elwood “Toby” Messer passed away on April 15, 2026, in Seminole, Texas, at the age of 92.

Royce was born on November 2, 1933, in Plainview, Texas, to James and Fern (Upchurch) Messer. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1961, including service during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged after eight years of military service. The values of duty, hard work, and loyalty that he carried from his years in the Marines remained with him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Royce returned to West Texas, where he spent nearly four decades farming cotton. He took great pride in working the land and providing for his family. Farming was more than an occupation to him—it was a way of life that reflected his strong work ethic and deep connection to West Texas.

Royce shared more than sixty years of marriage with his beloved wife, Alma Jean Messer, who preceded him in death in May 2025. Their enduring partnership was the foundation of their family and a testament to their commitment and love.

Known to family and friends as “Toby,” he never met a stranger. He was well known for his warm personality, sense of humor, and ability to make people feel welcome. He developed friendships that spanned generations, and many of his closest companions were decades younger than he was. His youthful spirit and genuine kindness made him a favorite among all who knew him.

Toby loved the outdoors and treasured the time he spent hunting and fishing. His deer lease and trailer by the lake became gathering places for family and friends and were the source of many of his happiest memories. He was also an avid golfer who enjoyed countless rounds with friends over the years. Whether in a fishing boat, on the golf course, or simply sharing stories with those he loved, Toby found joy in life's simple pleasures.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Fern Messer; his wife of more than sixty years, Alma Jean Messer; his daughters, Shryl Glynn and Sharon Kay; and his brothers, Shorty, Coy, and Richard Messer.

He is survived by his brother, John Messer; his granddaughter, Jessica Nielson of Cornwall, New York; his great-grandchildren, Conor, Carli, and Charlotte; his grandson, Keifer Messer of Blanco, Texas; his stepsons, Steven Ray Dye and Michael Leroy Dye; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his friendship, generosity, and good humor.

Toby will be remembered for his service to his country, his years spent farming the West Texas land he loved, his devotion to family, and the many friendships he cultivated throughout his life. His legacy lives on in the memories shared around the lake, at the deer lease, on the golf course, and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
