Oleta Sue Currie

March 8, 1932 — June 9, 2024

Funeral services for Oleta Sue (Floyd) Currie, 92, of Seagraves, will be Saturday, June

15, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Seagraves with Dr. Troy Wayne Martin

officiating, assisted by Pastor Greg White. Interment will follow in the Gaines County

Cemetery of Seagraves under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home.

Sue passed away due to a brief illness on June 9, 2024, in her home surrounded by her

family. She was born on March 8, 1932, in Afton, Texas, to Howard Edwin Floyd and

Lucille Elizabeth (Benham) Floyd. She married Donald “Ben” Currie in Seagraves on

April 15, 1951. Sue was a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great

grandmother, and was a devoted member of the Seagraves Church of the Nazarene for

over seventy years. Her love, kindness, and generosity were known by many.

Sue was a faithful believer in Christ, serving her church with compassion and love.

Through the years, she held the position of Sunday School teacher, VBS Director,

Church Board Secretary, Church Treasurer, and Board Member. In 2006, Sue and Ben

were awarded a Distinguished Service Award for their dedication to Christ’s work. Sue

never forced her belief in Christ on others; instead, she was a living example of Jesus’s

love.

Working on the farm was a year-round occurrence for the Curries. Sue labored along

side her children and her husband in the cotton fields, teaching her children the value

of an honest day’s work.

As a young woman, Sue served as a clerk at Doty’s Grocery Store. After her marriage

to Ben, she became a bookkeeper for Mack Hill Oil Company, working there while Ben

was in the Service. When Ben returned home, Sue took on the role of wife and mother,

caring for her children until they left home one-by-one. After her youngest left for

college, she worked for Bandy’s Grocery Store, and then became the head bookkeeper

and office manager for Five Points Gin. She worked there until the mid-eighties when

she became a full-time grandmother. She rarely missed any event in which her

grandchildren were involved.

One of the most important positions Sue ever held was that of Family Matriarch. She

had a unique and genuine way of making everyone feel as though they were the most

important person in the world. She placed Christ first and family and friends next. Sue

was a selfless and amazing woman that made the world a brighter place.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Donald “Ben” Currie; parents

Howard and Lucille Floyd; brother Sonny Floyd; and sisters Jean Lowry and Betty

Stewart.

Sue is survived by her son Joel Currie, and wife Barbara of Seagraves; daughters

Karen Day and husband Larry, and Gina Hawkins and husband Bryan, all of Seminole;

brother Lucky Floyd and wife Pam of Dallas; and sister LaValta Martin of Seagraves;

brother-in-law Loy Lowry of Pico Rivera, California; and sister-in-law Linda Floyd of

Brownfield. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren and fifteen great

grandchildren. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Family visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM on Friday, June 14, at Ratliff Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Seagraves Senior Citizens Center or Seagraves Church of

the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, PO Box 456, Seagraves, Texas, 79359.
