His Life and Legacy

Marvin was born on March 12, 1961, in Portales, New Mexico, to Marvin Fayne Stockard Sr. and Dorothy Roberta Phillips Stockard.

A lifelong resident of Denver City, Marvin attended all of his K-12 school years locally, graduating with the Denver City High School Class of 1979. Immediately after graduation, he went to work for Raymond Whisenhunt at Ray’s Auto Parts. Marvin always proudly considered himself “a parts man,” working in several other parts-related roles later in life until he was no longer able to work. Though he moved several times over the years to stay close to his family, he always returned to Denver City—it was home. In his final years, he grew very comfortable living independently, deeply appreciating his beloved neighbors, Margie and Felix.

A Man of Heart, Humor, and Intellect

Marvin possessed a tender, compassionate heart and grieved deeply when his loved ones were hurting. He was a passionate animal lover who never met a creature he didn't try to befriend. He lovingly cared for numerous cats of his own and was always quick to help feed his friends' pets whenever needed.

He had a wonderful sense of humor and a unique habit of rarely calling anyone by their given name, firmly believing that personal nicknames were much more fitting.

Marvin was incredibly intelligent and could do anything he set his mind to. Musically gifted, he excelled on the slide trombone in the school band, though his true passion was playing the drums. Driven by that love for music, he went on to teach himself several other instruments. He also possessed a sharp mind for puzzles, riddles, and number games. Later in life, history became a great passion of his. Marvin spent countless hours independently researching and taking thousands of pages of notes, focusing a great deal of his study on End Times prophecy and the Bible.

His Faith and Joys

Marvin embraced his faith at an early age, becoming a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (currently known as the Community of Christ) in the summer of 1976. While the Hobbs, New Mexico mission he regularly attended with his family is no longer active, and travel limitations prevented him from attending services in person, Marvin remained a faithful follower of Jesus. He continued his spiritual journey through independent Bible study and by following TV evangelists.

Marvin truly loved television, especially enjoying the modern era of choice that allowed him to watch countless documentaries, movies, current news, and series. Throughout his life, he was blessed with opportunities to attend concerts and visit the Dallas Cowboys stadium for a professional game with close friends who shared his love for sports and all kinds of music. He also found great joy in the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing.

Knowing that Marvin now resides with our Heavenly Father, and that he placed his trust in our Savior, Jesus Christ, brings comfort in this time of earthly sorrow. His family holds tightly to the hope of seeing him again as a perfect spiritual being—free from pain and tears—when our own time on this earth is done.

Family

Marvin was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Fayne Stockard Sr.; his four grandparents; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Stockard of Portales, New Mexico; two sisters, Janice Stockard of Portales, New Mexico, and Cyndi Voyles of Claremore, Oklahoma; two nieces, Tosha Evans and her husband, Ryan, and Victoria Hinck and her fiancé, Aaron Phillips; and five great-nieces and nephews, Cade, Juniper, Avery, Eagle, and Zephron, as well as many friends who are loved and feel like family.

Marvin was loved by many family members and friends who will forever cherish their memories with him. He will never be forgotten.
