Janis Stewart

December 13, 1942 — November 23, 2022

Funeral services for Janis Stewart, 79, of Lubbock formerly of Seminole will be conducted Tuesday, November 29, at 10:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Joe Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in the Gaines County Memorial Cemetery with services under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home of Seminole. She died in her home on Wednesday, November 23 in Lubbock.

Janis was born at home on December 13, 1942 to Tom and Hazel Jackson in Hockley County near Levelland. She grew up in a large family on a working farm with 4 sisters and 2 brothers. She often reminisced about picking out her dress at the feed store. She attended Ropes High School and later got her G.E.D.

Joe Ed and Janis Jackson were married October 11, 1960 in Mexico. They moved around several locales in Texas (with a brief stint in New Mexico) and finally found home in Gaines County where they raised three sons: Joe, Calvin, and Bobby.

Janis was the quintessential super mom. She juggled farming, canning, cleaning, bookkeeping, home repairs, along with a pivotal role at Pioneer Gin. She was equally at home in a cotton trailer or at an elegant soirée.

Her tenacity had a tender spot while her love was tempered with unbending resolve. A perfect day included tending her menagerie of flowers in her manicured lawn, several conversations with either her sons, in-laws, grandchildren or siblings, an order from Amazon, and a glass of wine and a steak with her sisters. She never learned to swim, had a secret talent of singing, and spent her last few weeks worshiping with Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, and Vince Gill and meeting new great-grandchildren.

She loved her connections with longtime friends from Ropes and Seminole and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Seminole. She had strong and special connections with her grandchildren, a host of lifelong friends, and the constant stream of customers and coworkers at her perch at Pioneer Gin.

Janis was preceded in death by her husband Joe Ed, a sister Lanelle, a grandson, Randell, and a great granddaughter, Jenson.

Janis is survived by her three sons Joe Stewart and wife Nancy of Seminole, Calvin Stewart and wife Linda of Midland and Bobby Stewart and wife Donna of Edmond, Oklahoma; grandsons include Torre, Addison, Tanner, Trey and granddaughters Pamela, Kimberly, Kristen, Allex, and Halie, 11 great grandchildren, sisters Tommy Hopkins, Barbara Witt, and Kay Cross with husband Charlie, and brothers Gerry Jackson and Hugh Wayne Jackson and wife Callie.

Visitation prior to the memorial service is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:00 on Monday, November 28 at Ratliff Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Lung Association, First Baptist Church of Seminole Forward in Faith building fund, or a charity of your choice.
