Athen Lowrie lived a long, beautiful life defined foremost by his deep faith in God and his commitment to living a Christian life. While he served his community faithfully for decades as a second-generation pharmacist, his true foundation was his devotion to the Lord, his family, and the church.
On the morning of May 24, 2026, Athen peacefully passed away at 6:20 a.m. in Seminole, the community he deeply loved and called home for the past 56 years. He was 86 years old.
Athen’s life began on October 19, 1939, in Wellington, Texas, where he was born to Henry and Lora Mae Lowrie as the youngest of three children. It was during his senior year of high school that he chose to follow in the footsteps of two paternal uncles and become a pharmacist. He earned his degree from Southwest Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, preparing for a lifetime of work that allowed him to quietly serve his neighbors.
In 1956, Athen began dating a fellow high school student, Glenda Brewer. The high school sweethearts were married on August 30, 1959, at her home church in Wellington, beginning a devoted Christian marriage that spanned 66 years. Following his graduation from college, Athen went to work for his uncle for a short time in Crosbyton, Texas, where he and Glenda welcomed their first son, Kenneth, in 1962. The family then relocated to Odessa, where they grew with the birth of their youngest son, Doug, in 1969. In 1970, the family moved from Odessa to Seminole. There, Athen and Glenda purchased Treadaway Pharmacy on the west side of the downtown square, which had originally been established as Cothes Drug in 1912. Within two decades, they built a new, larger store, where Glenda oversaw the front of the store and Athen managed the pharmacy. During those same years, they moved into their family home, which they extensively renovated and enlarged over the years, preserving it as a welcoming place for family and friends.
Athen’s greatest devotion outside of his home was to the Westside Church of Christ, where he served as a longtime, faithful elder. His faith was woven into everything he did, including his role in helping establish the First National Bank in Seminole, where he proudly presented the original charter. Outside of his professional and church responsibilities, Athen found great joy in restoring antique cars. He poured his patience and skill into completely rebuilding a 1933 Ford "hot rod" and a 1951 MGTD. He also lovingly restored a Corvette for his son, Kenneth.
Family was Athen’s greatest earthly pride, raised under the banner of his faith. Both of his sons graduated from Seminole High School. Kenneth and his wife, Belinda (Bass), also originally of Seminole, reside in Gordon, TX. They blessed Athen and Glenda with five grandchildren: Makenzie Francisco, Kendel Lowrie, Kenten Lowrie, Lacee Bingham, and Braidy Bingham. Their youngest son Doug and his wife LynnAnne reside in Midland, TX. They blessed Athen with two grandsons: Athen Michael and Kendrick.
Athen is reunited in peace and in the presence of his Lord with his parents, Henry and Lora Mae Lowrie; his brother, Tommy; and his cherished grandson, Kenten.
His memory and legacy of faith live on through his devoted wife, Glenda; his sons and daughters-in-law; his ten grandchildren; his sister, Barbara Uselton of Gainesville; and four precious great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Everleigh, Elliott, and Emmett.
In lieu of flowers memorials to Westview Boys’ Homes in Hollis, Oklahoma.
